Helmuth Valersi was born in 1957 in Laives (South Tyrol, Italy). As the first South Tyrolean to do so, he studied percussion at the Conservatory of the City of Innsbruck under Prof. Fred Aigner and Dieter Kahler. He graduated with distinction in 1980.
He began his teaching career in 1978 as an instructor of percussion and music theory at the Directorate of the German and Ladin Music Schools of South Tyrol. Since then, he has taught continuously at the music schools of Brixen (Bressanone), Auer (Ora), Leifers (Laives), Eppan (Appiano), and Bozen (Bolzano), shaping the musical education of numerous students over several decades.
From 2002 to 2012, he served as Head of the Department for Percussion, Jazz, and Popular Music. In this capacity, he was responsible for developing new curricula, selecting appropriate teaching materials, and organizing professional development programs for teachers. He further refined his expertise through advanced training with internationally renowned instructors, including Andy Gillmann, René Cremers, Mike Quinn, André Várkonyi, Gerald Endstrasser, Hans Peter Becker, Peter Sadlo, and Howard Stevens.
Alongside his pedagogical work, Helmuth Valersi has pursued a versatile artistic career spanning a wide range of musical styles. Until 2015, he performed as a percussionist with the Haydn Orchestra of Bolzano and Trento, collaborating with distinguished conductors. He also appeared as a timpanist with the Bolzano Cathedral Orchestra under the direction of Prof. Herbert Paulmichl, participating in numerous concerts and solemn liturgical celebrations. Throughout his musical career, he has been continuously active as a bandmaster of various wind bands in South Tyrol – a role he continues to fulfill to this day.
His ensemble activities include performances with the String Academy Bolzano, the Erl Festival (Tyrol), the percussion ensemble “Percussuono,” the Big Band “Hanspeters Orchestra,” the Brass Band South Tyrol, the South Tyrolean Brass Ensemble, the dance band “Tadellos,” a jazz trio, and the Südseit Combo.
