Schloss Karneid
Majestically rising from its rocky perch above the Eggental valley, Schloss Karneid stands as a historic landmark of South Tyrol, with origins dating back to the 12th century. Once a strategic fortress and later an aristocratic residence, the castle tells stories of knights, noble lords, and eventful times shaped by power, commerce, and a deep sense of homeland. It is precisely this historical atmosphere – this blend of strength, pride, and tradition – that is brought vividly to life in the concert march “Schloss Karneid.”
From the very beginning, brilliant trumpet fanfares open the musical gates of the castle. Powerful and majestic, they paint an aural picture of the fortress towering high above the valley, as if the morning mist were lifting to reveal its battlements and ancient walls.
As the piece unfolds, an energetic march develops, driven by distinctive rhythms, memorable melodic lines, and skillful orchestration. The traditional march structure is enriched with vivid tone painting, evoking images of historic celebrations in the castle courtyard and proud ceremonial processions.
A particularly emotional highlight awaits the audience in the TRIO section: the trombone register resounds with the well-known Tyrolean folk song “Tirol, Tirol, Tirol, du bist mein Heimatland.” It is a heartfelt musical declaration of love for one’s homeland – a resonant tribute to history, tradition, and Tyrolean pride.
A work that leaves a lasting impression – steadfast and imposing, just like the castle itself.
